Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class shot up the national rankings thanks in large part to the commitments of two five-star recruits.

Then five-star Penn State pledge Micah Parsons opened up his recruitment in April. And now the Lions lost a commitment from another five-star recruit.

Late on Tuesday night, five-star quarterback Justin Fields announced that he was no longer verbally committed to Penn State.

Fields is the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 6 player overall in the 2018 class. The 6-3, 220-pound Kennesaw, Ga. recruit originally committed to Penn State back in December days before the Lions won the B1G Championship.

It’s worth noting that Fields said his recruitment “is in no way a reflection of any deficiencies of PSU coaches, players or fans.” Fields could still end up committing to the Lions, though they’ll obviously have plenty of competition.

With offers from seemingly every program in the country, the 247sports crystal ball favors Florida. Fields will inevitably have increased attentionĀ from southern schools like Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia.

With Fields opening up his recruitment, the Lions are still at No. 5 nationally in the 247sports class rankings. Five-star all-purpose back Ricky Slade is still committed to Penn State, as are three other top-100 recruits.

Franklin still has a loaded 2018 class without Fields. He took to Twitter to share a timely quote from Mahatma Gandhi shortly after Fields’ announcement.
