When your offense struggles as much as Rutgers, a quarterback change is almost a sure-fire guarantee.

On Monday, Chris Ash made the move.

The Rutgers coach announced that Gio Rescigno will replace Chris Laviano under center for next week’s game against Minnesota. Ash did say he wants to make it a week-by-week situation.

The decision came two days removed from Rutgers’ fourth straight game with single-digit points. The Scarlet Knights averaged 3.5 points per game in the last month.

Rescigno came into Saturday’s game against Illinois and delivered Rutgers’ first touchdown in 11 quarters. He finished the day 10-of-18 for 120 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for 37 yards in the 24-7 loss.

Laviano struggled mightily, especially after losing Janarion Grant for the season. Laviano was 11-of-32 for 101 yards in the last three weeks. He made 18 straight starts for Rutgers.

Rescigno’s first career start will come on Saturday at Minnesota.
