With sophomore guard Cole Banwart out for the remainder of the season, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is looking for more offensive line depth. He’ll find some by not redshirting freshman offensive lineman Justin Britt.

“We’ve made the decision he’s playing,” said Ferentz in a press conference on Tuesday. “That’s not a discussion anymore. Our attitude is we’ll just keep watching him in practice. If we can get him in the game, we’ll get him in the game.”

Britt joins running back Tyler Goodson as the only two Iowa freshmen that won’t redshirt (at least for now) this season. Iowa needs Britt after the injury to Banwart, but Britt has also earned his chance at playing time.

“He’s improving every week and is pushing in that direction,” Ferentz said. “We have an open mind and have had an open mind over a month now with him and everybody.”

Iowa is trying to rebound after losing its last two games against Michigan and Penn State. The Hawkeyes will host Purdue at 12 pm ET this Saturday.
