Ex-Iowa guard CJ Fredrick on transfer: ‘Kentucky in no way reached out to me before the portal’

CJ Fredrick is setting the record straight, saying that there was no tampering going on before his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal following Iowa’s season.
According to Kyle Tucker of The Athletic, Fredrick said Kentucky did not speak with him until he entered his name into the portal. Once he did, it was the first program to contact him.
“Kentucky in no way way had reached out to me before the portal,” Fredrick said. He continued to say that Calipari was one of the first people to call after he did decide to explore options outside of Iowa City.
Iowa transfer CJ Fredrick, who led Covington Catholic to a state title at Rupp Arena, looking forward to “making more memories” in that building as a Wildcat.

Fredrick was a key piece for the Hawkeyes on both ends of the floor last season. He averaged 7.5 points, 1.9 assists and 1.1 rebounds while shooting over 47% from the floor and behind the 3-point line. During the 2019-20 season, he averaged more than 10 points and nearly 3 assists per game.
Fredrick has played in 52 career games at Iowa, missing four last season because of injury. He was a member of a Hawkeyes team that finished 22-9 and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
He will have three years of eligibility to use at Kentucky.
