Purdue continues to beef up its defense through the NCAA transfer portal.
On Tuesday, the Boilermakers received a pledge from junior college defensive tackle PrinceJames Boyd Jr. He made his announcement on Twitter, committing to Purdue after initially pledging to Texas State. He’ll come to West Lafayette via Independence Community College.
Boyd will bring great size to the defensive front with a 6-foot-5, 300-pound frame. He also adds good depth to a position group that has struggled the past two seasons.

This offseason, Purdue has added four defensive players via transfer. Boyd is the third defensive lineman to transfer into Purdue, joining Damarjhe Lewis (Indiana) and Joseph Anderson (South Carolina).
Purdue has also received help defensively from former Auburn linebacker Octavius Brothers and ex-Florida cornerback C.J. McWilliams.
The Boilermakers are looking to bounce back after posting back-to-back losing seasons in 2019 and 2020. Defense has been a big issue and Purdue will be on its third defensive coordinator in as many season in 2021.
