Nebraska doesn’t have to wait too much longer to make its trip overseas to Ireland.
Last week, Nebraska and Northwestern agreed to terms for a 2022 game in Dublin, Ireland at Aviva Stadium. The pair of B1G West will open the season with a Week 0 matchup, providing plenty of intrigue for the first weekend of the college football season.
For Nebraska, its a rescheduled game of what was supposed to be a 2021 trip to Ireland. This season’s game in Dublin in Week 0 against Illinois was called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will instead be played in Champaign. The Huskers worked quickly in rescheduling the overseas trip, as Northwestern agreed to partake in the contest.
Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos is looking forward to the matchup, and is also excited about not playing in Evanston.
“We have not had good success in Evanston since Scott (Frost) has been here,” Moos said, per Parker Gabriel of Husker Extra. “We’ve lost twice up there. Now we take that Northwestern home game and we make that a Nebraska home game.”
Moos expects Aviva Stadium to be filled with red shirts.
Nebraska and Northwestern have had some epic battles since the Huskers joined the B1G in 2011. The two teams have played 10 times and eight of those games have been decided by one possession. Six have been settled by 3 points or less.
Hopefully the trip to Ireland delivers another thrilling game between the two programs.
