5-star Ohio State QB commit Quinn Ewers explains why he didn’t pick a Texas school

Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers could have gone to almost any school in the country — especially in his home state of Texas.
But the Southlake, Texas, native chose Ohio State, continuing a trend of 5-stars to leave the Lone Star State rather than play for the Longhorns or Aggies.
Ewers spoke with 247Sports’ Chris Hummer this week about a myriad of topics, including why he’s leaving the state of Texas.
“Probably because a Texas team hasn’t been in the running for a national championship in a little while,” Ewers said when asked about the trend of 5-stars leaving the state. “And I don’t know about other guys, but like me I just, I just want to compete at the highest, highest level. Obviously, one day they will get back there and it’ll be great. But right now, it’s just, I’m just tired seeing that happen. Obviously, Texas A&M was really close last year.”
Texas, which is the school Ewers originally committed to, hasn’t been on the national stage since the 2009 season when it lost the BCS National Championship Game to Alabama. Since then, the Longhorns have won 10 games just once — when they went 10-4 in 2018.
Texas A&M went 9-1 last season, but that program has also lacked consistency. The Aggies haven’t won double-digit games since Johnny Manziel was on campus on 2012. Before that, the last time was 1998.
Ewers is the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s been committed to Ohio State since Nov. 19, 2020.
