Don Brown was considered a home run hire for Michigan.

After leading the top defense in the country at Boston College, the assumption was that with Michigan’s athletes, Brown could turn a dynamic defense into the nation’s best.

So far, it’s hard to argue with that.

That’s why Jim Harbaugh is advocating for his new defensive coordinator to receive some national recognition.

Brown’s high-pressure defense yielded a blistering start to 2016. Michigan leads all of FBS teams with just 207 yards allowed per game. That’s 45 yards less than second-place Florida.

A lot of that is a credit to Michigan’s third-down defense, which is also tops in the country at 13 percent. It’s no wonder that Michigan leads the nation in scoring defense at just 10 points allowed per game.

Thanks to Brown’s blitz-happy defense, the Wolverines haven’t allowed more than 10 points in any of their four B1G games.

In other words, Harbaugh might have a pretty good argument.

Brown will inevitably be up for the Broyles Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach. If Brown were to receive the honor, it would be the third time in four years that the award went to a B1G East assistant (Tom Herman, Pat Narduzzi).

Harbaugh wouldn’t mind seeing Brown’s defense crank up the tempo another notch for Saturday’s showdown against Michigan State.

So far, it’s not easy to find anything Brown does wrong.
