Virginia Tech linebacker Isi Etute has reportedly been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. CBS Sports was one of multiple outlets to report the news on Wednesday.
Etute, a freshman, was arrested in relation to an incident that occurred ion May 31 that resulted in the death of a resident of Blacksburg, Virginia. A hearing has been set for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 3.
After learning of the arrest, Virginia Tech suspended Etute and released a statement on the situation.
“The Virginia Tech and Town of Blacksburg communities are united in our shared concern for the welfare of all. Together, we denounce all acts of violence and stand together in support of one another,” the university said in a statement. “You don’t need to be close to this to be affected by this. If you need assistance or support, you are encouraged to reach out for help.”
Etute, a native of Virginia Beach, was a 3-star member of Virginia Tech’s 2021 recruiting class.
Details regarding the situation have not been released at this time. Etute is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bond.
