Michigan is losing another linebacker to the transfer portal.
Angeliqe Chengelis of The Detroit News reported on Wednesday night that Cornell Wheeler has decided to explore his options outside of Ann Arbor. He joins a growing list of former Wolverines to enter the portal since the conclusion of the 2020 college football season.
Wheeler, a West Bloomfield native, was a 3-star member of Michigan’s 2020 recruiting class. He spent just one season with the Wolverines before decided to look for other opportunities.

Out of high school, Wheeler was ranked as the No. 22 inside linebacker in the class and was considered one of the Top 500 overall prospects. He was also a Top 15 talent out of Michigan.
The 6-foot, 230-pound Wheeler did not see any game action in his first year with the Wolverines. The team finished the season with a 2-4 record, the only losing record under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Also this offseason, Michigan has lost William Mohan, Ben VanSumeren, Adam Shibley and Adam Fakih from the linebacker position. Several other key pieces — QB Joe Milton, RB Zach Charbonnet, RB Christian Turner and WR Giles Jackson — have also departed the program.
