We may have a little more insight on what the future of the College Football Playoff looks like in a little over a week.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich is reporting that a sub-committee is expected to prepare and present a report analyzing the positives and negatives of the four-team field, as well as a look at potential expansion models. It will be presented to the full group of FBS commissioners.
The meeting, which will be held in-person, are scheduled for June 17-18 in Chicago. According to Dinich, the potential for change to the format have been discussed for the past two years.
“It’s the regularly scheduled June meeting off the management committee,” executive director Bill Hancock told ESPN. “They will review the working group’s recommendation about a potential new format. … These meetings are a step in a process that will continue at least until this fall.
“If any change is ultimately adopted by the board of managers, it would not take place this season or next season. The date for implementing any change is one of the key matters that will be discussed.”
Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reported on Tuesday that a 12-team model for the College Football Playoff is the favorite model, should the field be expanded. There are no guarantees on whether expansion will occur or what the final number would be at this time.
Dinich also says that next week’s meeting will be “the most revealing information to date” regarding the future of the College Football Playoff.
