Chicago Bears WR says he was ‘Smiling mid-route’ during first Justin Fields deep ball

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is already impressing teammates and coaches.
Bears receiver Darnell Mooney is entering his second season, and spent his rookie campaign dealing with sub-par quarterback play from Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles.
So when Fields threw a perfect deep ball during a recent practice, Mooney had a strong reaction.
“I’ve caught one or two deep balls from him. The very first one he threw up to me, I was smiling mid-route, just seeing the ball in the air and where it was placed,” Mooney told reporters on Wednesday. “He’s very accurate with his ball, and he understands exactly where he wants the ball.”
Fields often utilized that deep ball at Ohio State, and it made him one of the most efficient passers in the country. As a junior, he completed 70.2 percent of his passes for 2100 yards and 22 touchdowns in just seven games.
The Bears traded up to take Fields with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s expected to compete with Andy Dalton for the starting job this offseason.
If Fields does start Week 1, it will be against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 12.
