The movement for expansion of the College Football Playoff may be coming a little sooner than expected.

Thursday afternoon, Sports Illustrated reporter Pat Forde reported that a release is expected to come from the College Football Playoff management committee regarding a recommendation for expansion. Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reported earlier this week that a 12-team model was leading the way, though there are no guarantees.

An announcement is expected to come after a meeting today.

The four-team model has come under major scrutiny recently because of its predictability. There’s also been a decline in ratings as the years have gone on.

The College Football Playoff was brought into the picture at the end of the 2014 season, with Ohio State winning the inaugural title. Since then, Alabama has won three national championships, Clemson has won two and LSU one.

It’ll be interesting to see what the recommendation will be on the expanded field and when the timeline is for a new format.
