Illinois is starting to take advantage of college football’s Week 0.

This season, the Fighting Illini are opening the 2021 campaign with a home game against B1G West foe Nebraska — a game initially scheduled for Dublin, Ireland but moved to Champaign because of the pandemic. The game is set for Saturday, Aug. 28, or Week 0 in college football.

Next year, Illinois will follow a similar plan. The school announced on Wednesday that it will host a Week 0 game for a second straight season.

Illinois will play Wyoming in Week 0 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 27. The Fighting Illini will then travel to Wisconsin on Sept. 3 to play the Badgers in their B1G opener.

Wyoming is one of three nonconference opponents on Illinois’ schedule for the 2022 season. Bret Bielema’s squad will also host Virginia (Sept. 10) and Chattanooga (Sept. 24).
