5-star defensive lineman Brenan Vernon is committed to Notre Dame.
Vernon announced that news on Tuesday afternoon, much to the dismay of Ohio State. Vernon is an in-state prospect who attends Mentor High School in Mentor, Ohio. Mentor is about 170 miles northeast of Columbus.

According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Vernon is the No. 18 overall player for the class of 2023.
Since Vernon is just a rising junior, the Buckeyes could still have enough time to get back in this race. Vernon won’t be able to officially sign with Notre Dame until December of 2022.
Former Ohio State defensive back Marcus Freeman is now the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, and played a key role in this recruitment. Vernon’s note above thanks Freeman as well as Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly.
Ohio State doesn’t currently have any commitments for the class of 2023 — which is not unusual for this time of year, especially with how the pandemic has impacted scouting efforts.
The Buckeyes’ 2022 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 1 nationally, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
