Another day of fall camp has come to a conclusion at Nebraska. Today it was the offense’s turn to talk.
Matt Lubick, the offensive coordinator for the Huskers, provided updates on the running back room, specifically Markese Stepp, the 6’1 230 pound Sophomore transfer from USC.
“Ahead of where we thought he’d be,” Lubick said following practice. “If we had to play tomorrow, Lubick said. He’d be ready to roll.”
Stepp missed most of spring practice due to a foot injury after transferring from USC in the offseason.
The Nebraska running back room is a crowded one with five guys vying for playing time.
“The running back rotation is still a work in progress.” Lubick said.

According to Lubick, Nebraska working five different guys through the rotation. Lubick listed four of the guys: Stepp, Sevion Morrison, Marvin Scott III and Rahmir Johnson. Not mentioned was Freshman Gabe Ervin.
The Huskers are looking to replace Dedrick Mills, the team’s top running back from a season ago. He totaled 396 yards and 3 touchdowns on 84 carries during the 2020 campaign and leaves a big void in the backfield.
Nebraska’s offense is also to alleviate some of the run game pressures off of quarterback Adrian Martinez. Last year, the junior QB was the team’s leading rusher with 521 yards and 7 touchdowns. This year, the Huskers are looking to produce on the ground out of the backfield rather than under center.
