Former Penn State athlete Joe Kovacs took home the silver medal in the shot put at the Tokyo Olympics early Thursday morning.

He also won the Silver Medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

On Thursday, he posted a throw of 22.65 meters (74 feet, 3.75 inches) on his fourth attempt, which was good enough to land him on the podium.

Fellow American Ryan Clouser took home gold with a throw of 23.10 meters.

This event had the exact same top three finishers as the Rio Olympics did five years ago, setting a record.

Kovacs is a 2012 graduate of Penn State. In 2012, he won the Big Ten outdoor championship with a throw of 20.85 meters.

He’s now won five medals in major competition, including two Gold Medals at the 2015 and 2019 World Championships. He also won Silver at the 2017 World Championship.

The next Summer Olympics are in Paris in 2024.
