Following a season in which the Michigan Wolverines limped to a 2-4 record and averaged 381.8 yards-per-game, a total that ranked seventh in the Big Ten, offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Josh Gattis is ready to leave 2020 in the past.

“I wish we could scrap everything,” he told the media Thursday at Schembechler Hall, via MLive’s Aaron McMann.

“Last year was just a challenging year in so many different ways. Not just football-wise, but in a normal activity (standpoint).

“Now it actually feels like we’re back to normal.”

The 2020 Wolverines began the season with then-redshirt sophomore Joe Milton at quarterback before flipping to redshirt freshman Cade McNamara during the triple-overtime road victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on November 21.

Milton has since transferred to the Tennessee Volunteers, while McNamara is still with the program, competing redshirt junior Alan Bowman, a Texas Tech Red Raiders transfer, and freshman J.J. McCarthy for the starting job.

On the offensive line, Michigan lost center Zach Carpenter, who transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers, but is set to return redshirt junior left tackle Ryan Hayes and interior linemen Andrew Stueber and Zak Zinter, a redshirt senior and sophomore, respectively.

The Wolverines’ first chance to show the progress they have been working toward will come on September 4, when they welcome in the Mid-American Conference’s Western Michigan Broncos at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.
