There’s a lot of love and respect for Joe Spivak in the Northwestern locker room. That became pretty clear this week, when the defensive lineman was named the recipient of the program’s No. 1 jersey.

According to Northwestern, the recipient of the No. 1 jersey is “The Ultimate Wildcat. The player who embodies and represents the Northwestern Wildcats not some of the time, but all the time. The consistency in the way he approaches school, the way he approaches life, and the way he approaches being the best teammate he can be every single day.”

Spivak was named the recipient of this year’s jersey. When Pat Fitzgerald made the announcement, everyone in the team’s meeting room celebrated the honor.

Below is the video, shared by Northwestern:

During the shortened 2020 season, Spivak posted 14 tackles with a tackle for loss and a sack.

Over the course of his career in Evanston, Spivak has been credited with 23 total stops and 2 tackles for loss. He will be one of the more experienced players on Northwestern’s defensive line for the 2021 season.

The Wildcats open up the 2021 season at home against Michigan State.
