Minnesota’s Gable Steveson wins wrestling gold medal thanks to last-second comeback

Minnesota wrestler Gable Steveson is an Olympic gold medalist.
Steveson clinched that honor in the final seconds of his match early Friday morning. Here’s video of his final maneuver that sealed first place at the Tokyo Olympics:

Steveson went from down 8-5 with under 10 seconds remaining to scoring a pair of two-point takedowns before the clock ran out.
His opponent in this match, Geno Petriashvili, is significantly more experienced on the international level. Petriashvili has three gold medal at wrestling World Championships under his belt, as well as bronze at the 2016 Olympics.
Steveson also won the NCAA Championships earlier this year for his weight class (285 pounds). He won gold at the 2021 and 2020 Big Ten Championships and took home silver in 2019.

This is the second straight day of a Big Ten athlete winning an Olympic medal. Former Penn State athlete Joe Kovacs took home silver in the shot put early Thursday morning.
