Even though Graham Mertz is expected to start for the Badgers this season, head coach Paul Chryst has been very impressed by his backup thus far.

Chase Wolf was outstanding in the red zone at practice on Tuesday, according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Wolf completed four touchdown passes on six attempts when he was put into the drill.

After that took place, Chryst spoke about it to Potrykus and how he’s loved how hungry Wolf has been.

“I’ve liked the way that Chase is approaching camp,”Chryst said after practice. “A lot of the questions have been about Graham, but Chase has been every bit as hungry and putting in the time.”

Wolf appeared in 3 games last season for the Badgers and finished 6-of-8 passing for 29 yards. He also had 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions in those 3 games. The only other playing experience Wolf has was in 2019 when he completed just 1 pass for 2 yards.

It’s still unlikely Wolf sees a bunch of playing time this season due to Mertz being a step above him. That being said, if Mertz was to go down, Wolf would be waiting to prove that these practices were no fluke.
