BTN crew provides takeaways from stop at Michigan State’s fall camp

The latest stop in their trip around the conference, a Big Ten Network crew – consisting of Dave Revsine, Howard Griffith, Gerry DiNardo, and Joshua Perry – stopped by Michigan State’s Thursday practice.

Before departing East Lansing, the analysts offered their takeaways from the Mel Tucker-led session.

2021 is Tucker’s second season at the helm. While his program recorded only two victories in his debut campaign, they were impressive in fashion, both coming over AP Top-15 teams at the time in Michigan and Northwestern.

Attrition could be the word to describe the Spartans’ offseason, as 26 players have left the program since the end of the 2020 campaign, many of whom were recruited by former head coach Mark Dantonio and his staff.

Using the NCAA transfer portal and one-time immediate eligibility to their advantage, Michigan State has brought in 18 transfers ahead of the 2021 season-opener, including wide receiver/tight end Maliq Carr from Purdue, linebacker Quavaris Crouch from Tennessee, wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick from Louisville, defensive end Drew Jordan from Duke, cornerback Chester Kimbrough from Florida, quarterback Anthony Russo from Temple, linebacker Ben VanSumeren from Michigan and tight end Powers Warren from Mississippi State.

As an interesting aside, Warren is the son of Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren.

The Spartans will begin their 2021 slate of games on a Friday, September 3, against Northwestern at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
