Matt Nagy still hasn’t budged on opening the door for Justin Fields to be the Week 1 starter for the Chicago Bears. But after the former Buckeye’s most recent practice, it might be difficult to keep him off the field.
NBC Sports Bears’ insider Adam Hoge had a glowing review of the rookie quarterback following Thursday’s practice. He said Fields was “nearly perfect” in red zone work.
“Well there’s no doubt the best QB on either field today was Justin Fields,” Hoge wrote. “Just completed a nearly perfect red zone period. Only incompletion was a drop by Riley Ridley in the back corner of the end zone on a good ball. All of Fields’ talent was on display.”

If that’s the case, Fields needs to be on the field to start the season.
Nagy has been reluctant to name the rookie the starter in Chicago thus far. Instead, he’s made the point that Andy Dalton is the No. 1 guy on the depth chart heading into the season.
Anything can happen, though. And if Fields is executing at a high level, even in training camp, it might be best to let him learn immediately.
It’ll be interesting to see what the ultimate decision is from the Bears when Week 1 arrives.
