After rough outing in preseason game, Tim Tebow’s time with Jaguars comes to an end

In a list of Tuesday morning roster moves, the Jacksonville Jaguars waived tight end Tim Tebow.

A converted quarterback, 2021 marked Tebow’s first taste of NFL action since 2015, when he appeared in all four preseason games for the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 21-of-36 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while rushing for 82 yards and another score.

 

Between his six-year professional football hiatus, he pursued a Major League Baseball career, spending parts of five seasons in the New York Mets organization as an outfielder, making it all the way to Triple-A Syracuse.

This opportunity with the Jaguars was helped made possible by Jacksonville’s hiring of Urban Meyer, Tebow’s coach during his collegiate days with the Florida Gators.

Playing 16 snaps in the Jaguars’ preseason-opening loss to the Cleveland Browns on August 14, Tebow did not record any receptions and has been the subject of some internet memes for a failed block attempt.

During his time in Gainesville, however, Tebow was one of the best quarterbacks the SEC has seen, leading the Gators to two BCS National Championships in 2006 and 2008, and capturing the 2007 Heisman Trophy.

His 9,285 passing yards are fourth-most in program history and his total of 2,947 yards on the ground is sixth on the school’s all-time list.

Originally selected by the Denver Broncos with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2010 Draft, Tebow led the team to a Wild Card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2011 season, finding Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Demaryius Thomas for the 80-yard game-winner on the first play of overtime.

If this is the end for the popular and often criticized Tebow’s football career, which seems likely at 34 years old, he will always be able to say he won two national championships, a Heisman Trophy, and an NFL playoff game, more than most quarterbacks can say.

Sans Tebow, Meyer and the Jaguars will begin their regular season on September 12 by traveling to NRG Stadium to battle the Houston Texans, an AFC South divisional foe, at 1 p.m. ET.
