Michigan DB Daxton Hill on new defensive scheme: ‘I feel like we have more freedom’

Michigan junior defensive back Daxton Hill believes he’s headed for his best season yet because of new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.
Last year, Hill amassed 46 tackles, an interception and had five pass deflections in his six starts. However, Hill felt he wasn’t being utilized to his full potential under ex-defensive coordinator Don Brown.
Hill deemed last year’s defensive unit as “one dimensional,” according to MLive. Now in Macdonald’s scheme, Hill feels more liberated.
“We just have a lot more calls,” Hill said to MLive. “Last year, we didn’t really have much (freedom) to show our true talents. Now, I feel like we have more freedom to do whatever we want.”
Hill added even more explanation about the impact of the newfound freedom on the field.
“Not whatever we want — but we have a lot more tools to pull from,” Hill said to MLive. “Whether it’s our talents or the coach’s calls. We’ve got a good year going for us.”
Michigan struggled with a 2-4 record last season, as the defensive allowed at least 38 points in three games. Michigan begins this season with a home matchup vs. Western Michigan on Sept. 4 (12 p.m. EST/ESPN).
