Ryan Day announces Ohio State’s starting QB for Week 1 vs. Minnesota

Ohio State has named its Week 1 starting quarterback.
Saturday morning, head coach Ryan Day announced that CJ Stroud will be the starting quarterback for Ohio State’s season opener against Minnesota. The game is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2 at Huntington Bank Stadium.
Stroud was considered the favorite to land the job since the spring game. He was competing with Kyle McCord, Jack Miller III and newcomer Quinn Ewers to win the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Earlier in fall camp, Day said Stroud had separated himself from the others.
None of the quarterbacks on Ohio State’s roster have thrown a collegiate pass. Stroud did see action during the 2020 season but did not air it out at any point. He did flash his athleticism in the Buckeyes’ 52-12 victory over Michigan State, taking 1 run 48 yards for a touchdown.
Ohio State is coming off a 7-1 campaign in 2020, which included a trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Stroud will be thrown into the fire with the Buckeyes opening 2021 with a conference foe.
