Teams across the NFL are trimming down their rosters, which includes the Detroit Lions. The team’s latest cuts include a pair of players with B1G ties.
Detroit announced a set of cuts on Monday. That included former Maryland running back Javon Leake and former Indiana outside linebacker Robert McCray.
The #Lions announced today the following roster moves:
Released – WR Darius Jennings
Waived – NT P.J. Johnson, RB Javon Leake, OLB Robert McCray, QB Jordan Ta’amu.

Leake, a Greensboro, North Carolina, native, is in his second professional season after a standout career with the Terps where he was a star returner and was first-team All-B1G in 2019. After going undrafted in 2020, Leake spent time with Washington and New York, where he never got beyond the teams’ practice squads. On Aug. 11, Leake signed with Detroit and has now been waived just 12 days after signing.
McCray departs from the Lions’ roster as he continues to find his way in the pro ranks. Like Leake, McCray came out of college and was undrafted. He starred with the Hoosiers, playing 42 games in his collegiate career while having 46 tackles and 8.5 sacks. In his final season at Indiana, he was named All-B1G honorable mention by the media.
McCray has bounced around now between three NFL teams: The Lions, Browns and Chiefs. The Atlanta native was drafted in the short-lived XFL revival but never signed with a team.
