One ESPN analyst and radio host is sounding off over the press release that came from the B1G in regards to The Alliance formed between the league, the ACC and Pac-12.
During Wednesday morning’s McElroy and Cubelic on JOX 94.5, Cole Cubelic took shots at the three leagues over statements made in the press release that announced the new alliance on Tuesday. He took particular exception to one aspect of the statement.
From the release:
The three conferences remain competitors in every sense but are committed to collaborating and providing thought and leadership on various opportunities and challenges facing college athletics, including:
- Student-athlete mental and physical health, safety, wellness and support
- Strong academic experience and support
- Diversity, equality and inclusion
- Social justice
- Gender equity
- Future structure of the NCAA
- Federal legislative efforts
- Postseason championships and future formats
Cubelic took exception to that part of the press release. And he didn’t hold back, either.
“What league is not doing these things right now?” Cubelic said. “What league is not watching out for student-athlete mental and physical health and safety? Where is there not a diversity initiative on a college campus? What college athletics program is not concerned about the future of the NCAA? Give me an athletic department that has not formed an initiative of the postseason championships and future formats. Where do those live? I would like to know. Because I would like to know — what is the point of you even doing this if these things are not at the forefront of what you’re attempting to accomplish?”
Cubelic went on to say that the he believes the B1G, ACC and Pac-12 are “so full of themselves that they don’t think the other guys are doing it.”
On Tuesday, the three league commissioners — Kevin Warren (B1G), Jim Phillips (ACC) and George Kliavkoff (Pac-12) — held a joint press conference announcing The Alliance. The details of the situation remain vague, but it’s clear the three leagues are working together in response to the SEC’s addition of Texas and Oklahoma.
