ESPN’s SP+ metric is projecting two Big Ten teams to finish with more than nine wins this season.
SP+ is projecting Ohio State and Wisconsin to both clear nine wins on average and for both teams to meet each other in the Big Ten Championship Game this December.
Looking elsewhere in the country, only Alabama (10.3), Oklahoma (10.4) and Clemson (10.8) are projected to win more than 10.0 games according to SP+.
SP+ is projecting nine teams to reach at least six wins and qualify for a bowl this season. The biggest surprise outside of those nine programs is perhaps Northwestern, as the Wildcats are only one year removed from winning the Big Ten West.
Here’s win total projections for every Big Ten team:
- Ohio State: 9.7
- Wisconsin: 9.2
- Penn State: 8.5
- Iowa: 8.1
- Michigan: 7.8
- Minnesota: 7.8
- Indiana: 6.8
- Nebraska: 6.5
- Maryland: 6.1
- Michigan State: 5.5
- Purdue 5.1
- Northwestern: 5.0
- Illinois: 4.2
- Rutgers: 4.2
SP+, a metric created by ESPN’s Bill Connelly, takes a number of factors into account for preseason projections. Those factors include recent success, recent recruiting history and returning production.
