Former Maryland running back Ty Johnson made a strong case for a starting position in the New York Jets’ preseason finale.

Johnson finished with 53 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, along with two catches for 18 yards in the Jets’ tie vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.

Johnson is currently listed as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart behind Tevin Coleman. Johnson has amassed 527 yards and a touchdown since being selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Maryland native amassed 4,196 all-purpose yards in college, third in program history. During his sophomore season, the electric Johnson set a Maryland record for yards per rush (9.1).

Maryland kicks off the season with a home matchup vs. West Virginia on Sept. 4 (3:30 p.m. EST/ESPN).
