Michigan State coach Mel Tucker knows how important it is for the Spartans to get off to a good start in 2021.

It’s Year 2 for Tucker, who left Colorado after the 2019 season to take over in East Lansing. The Spartans went just 2-5 last season, so they’re looking for significant improvement in 2021.

That journey starts on Friday night as Northwestern hosts Michigan State in Week 1. Hours before kick off, Tucker released this hype video that includes a passionate speech to his team.

“It’s about the team,” Tucker said in the video. “It’s about this guy that’s standing next to you right now. He’s counting on you to do your job so he can do his job. He’s counting on you, he’ll always count on you. You count on him!”

Despite Michigan State’s struggles a year ago, Tucker’s squad did secure an upset win over Northwestern. It was Northwestern’s first loss of the season at the time and effectively knocked the Wildcats out of any College Football Playoff discussions.

Michigan State has won the last two meetings in this series and holds a 39-20 all-time advantage over Northwestern.

Kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET.
