Donovan Edwards was a highly touted 5-star recruit out of high school last year.

Now a freshman at Michigan, he’s expected to play a major role in the Wolverines’ run game. In his college debut in Week 1, he had 6 rushes for 27 yards.

The numbers didn’t jump off the box score, but he still impressed the Michigan coaching staff — specifically offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.

“I think Donovan Edwards is the one who probably impressed me the most,” Gattis said Wednesday, via MLive.com. “Although he didn’t have as big of the runs that Blake or Hassan had, he showed us a different style of runs on Saturday. He’s made a ton of plays in training camp of just bouncing the ball and being electric out in space, but what he showed us on Saturday was the ability to lower his shoulder and run people over, that physicality. He’s a great mix between both of those two guys. I probably left out of the game the most surprised by him.”

It sounds like we’ll see more of Edwards this season, especially given Gattis’ comments. He’s definitely one to watch for Jim Harbaugh’s squad.

Michigan will face Washington on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
