Here are the B1G’s team statistical leaders through Week 1 of the 2021 season

Week 1 of the college football season is in the books, and some teams are already starting to separate themselves statistically. 

It’s still early, but there are patterns already appearing in the statistical leaderboards that were predictable and expected. For example, Ohio State appears on this list for three of the four offensive categories. Michigan does, too. 

Ohio State has several of the Big Ten’s leaders on the individual side, as well. 

On the other hand, there are some surprises already. For example, Rutgers made the leaderboard for all three defensive categories below. The Scarlet Knights thumped Temple in their Week 1 matchup.

1. Rutgers: 61 points per game
2. Michigan: 47 points per game
3. Ohio state: 45 points per game

Yards per play

1. Ohio State: 10.31 yards per play
2. Michigan: 9.18 yards per play
3. Michigan State: 8.11 yards per play

Passing offense

1. Maryland: 332 yards per game
2. Purdue: 313 yards per game
3. Ohio State: 294 yards per game

Rushing offense

1. Michigan: 335 yards per game
2. Michigan State: 326 yards per game
3. Nebraska: 244.5 yards per game

Defensive Leaders

Yards per play allowed

1. Iowa: 3.64 yards per play
2. Penn State: 3.84 yards per play
3. Rutgers: 4.14 yards per play

Turnover margin

1. Rutgers: +5
2. Maryland: +4
3. Penn State: +3

Opponent 3rd down conversion

1. Rutgers: 15.38 percent
2. Wisconsin: 23.08 percent
