It takes a unique player with a diverse skill set to be a tight end, and Ohio State’s Jeremy Ruckert is one of those players.
A lot of offenses love to have tight ends that can catch the ball and make plays with yards after the catch. However, a good tight end must be able to also do the dirty work of an offensive lineman. That includes operating as an efficient run blocker, clearing lanes for the ball carrier.
According to Jim Nagy, a former NFL scout who is the Executive Director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, finesse tight ends that primarily serve as pass catchers are some of the toughest players to sell to NFL coaches. Nagy pointed out Ruckert will not have that problem, highlighting one of Ruckert’s devastating blocks from the Minnesota game as proof.
Some of hardest guys to sell in a draft room when coaches become part of evaluation process are finesse pass-catching F-only tight ends. TE coaches generally want nothing to do with those guys. Scouts won’t have that issue with @OhioStateFB Jeremy Ruckert (@Jeremy_Ruckert1). 😤 pic.twitter.com/mEsBv8tIkm

Ruckert also had 1 catch for 15 yards in the win. For his career, Ruckert has 321 yards receiving and 9 touchdowns while averaging 11.1 yards per catch. Hopefully, his balanced work as a tight end pays off in the draft.
