It wasn’t easy, but Minnesota was able to grind out a 31-26 victory over Miami (OH) in Week 2.
The win put the Gophers in the win column after they struggled in their season-opener against Ohio State.
Coach P.J. Fleck was excited about the victory, while acknowledging areas where his team can improve in Week 3 and beyond. Perhaps most notably, Fleck was disappointed in his team’s inability to finish the game when they had chances to.
“They’re good players too, and you can’t take that away from them,” Fleck said about the Redhawks. “We had opportunities to put the game away and we did not. And when you leave a window for a team like that, they’re going to run right through that thing.
“You gotta give Miami a lot credit.”

Fleck also commented on quarterback Tanner Morgan’s lack of passing yards in the second half.
“We had three drives that ended from drops. So, in my mind, if we’re going to drop the football, we better run the football then,” Fleck said. “We better go end the game in the run game and make it way shorter. You gotta go by what’s happening on the field.”

Fleck was disappointed in his front seven’s lack of consistency vs. Miami (OH):
“I would say that we were a little inconsistent.”
