There was plenty of hype before Saturday’s Cy-Hawk Classic in Ames, Iowa before No. 10 Iowa took the field at Jack Trice Stadium against in-state rival No. 9 Iowa State.
In last week’s poll, the two teams were ranked in the top 10, ESPN’s weekly GameDay morning show was on hand for the event, and the matchup seemed destined to be one for the books.
The game was just that, if the book was focused on the success of the Iowa football program, as the Hawkeyes left Ames after sticking it to the Cyclones on their home turf with a 27-17 victory. The Hawkeyes forced four turnovers and kept the ISU offfense in check for most of the game.
Among those coming down on the Iowa State showing was ESPN analyst Paul Finebuam.
Spare me any further conversation. I’m done talking about Iowa State.https://t.co/FIoCYsDOJH pic.twitter.com/Y7j3cY0olp

“You don’t get a moment like that very often,” Finebaum said of Iowa State’s opportunity vs. Iowa at home on Saturday. “Quite frankly, I don’t really care about Iowa State the rest of the way. You can prop them up and say, ‘well that’s going to be a great game’ … Spare me the conversation. I’m officially done with Iowa State.”
The win is the sixth-straight for Iowa in the Cy-Hawk Classic, and while the last six years have been the greatest stretch of success in Iowa State history, it still hasn’t been enough for the Cyclones to beat their greatest rival.
