Jeff Brohm talked at length about improving the defense during the offseason, and so far, Purdue has delivered. So much so, that the Boilermakers fielded one of the best performances along the front line during Week 2 action.

According to Pro Football Focus, Purdue’s defensive line ranked No. 4 this weekend after grading the units across the sport. With a score of 86.4, the Boilers were behind LSU (90.3), Oklahoma (89.3) and Auburn (88.2).

Not bad.

Of course, Purdue did play a bad UConn team on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies have played three games and are off to an 0-3 start. They have yet to score a point against an FBS opponent getting shutout by Fresno State (45-0) and Purdue (49-0).

Still, the fact that the Boilermaker defense received a mention is notable after suffering a lot of failures on that side of the ball the past two seasons. It’s a major step in the right direction.

The test does become a little more daunting for Brohm’s squad this weekend, though. Purdue will rekindle an old rivalry with No. 12 Notre Dame in South Bend, which features a battle of unbeatens.

We’ll really see what this Purdue defense is made of on Saturday afternoon.
