ESPN analyst gives ‘panic meter’ update for Ohio State after Oregon loss

ESPN college football reporter Adam Rittenberg thinks it’s almost time to panic in Columbus.
The Buckeyes are coming off a Week 2 loss to Oregon in which the Ducks repeatedly shredded Ohio State’s defense. That’s the primary reason for concern, as defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has struggled to settle into his second stint with Ohio State.
According to Rittenberg, Ohio State’s “panic meter” is now at a 4, with 5 representing the maximum level of panic. Here’s an excerpt from his analysis:
Coombs is known as a recruiter and an energy guy for Ohio State. But his ability to make schematic adjustments for the Big Ten season will be under the microscope. While it’s still early, Ohio State’s defense hasn’t looked great in three of the past four seasons, an unsettling trend.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day was critical of Coombs’ defense during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
“When you look at the results over the last couple games and then coming off last year, it’s not what we expect here,” Day told reporters. “It’s not our expectation.”
Ohio State will have a chance to get back on track in Week 3 as it hosts Tulsa.
