CFP executive director gives timeline for deciding on playoff expansion

Expansion for the College Football Playoff has been officially delayed, but decisions could still be finalized in the coming months.
College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said Wednesday that a final decision would have to be made “in a few months” if the playoff is to expand by the 2024-25 season. That’s according to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and Chris Vannini.
However, Hancock didn’t rule out the possibility that expansion wouldn’t go into effect until 2026. If that’s the case, college football power brokers would have “a couple of years” to make final decisions.
College Football Playoff expansion seemed inevitable as recently as this summer, with momentum building toward a 12-team setup. However, Oklahoma and Texas’ departure for the SEC has seemingly altered those discussions.
Hancock said Wednesday that power brokers will meet — some over Zoom, some in person in Chicago — later this month. However, a formal vote on the future of the College Football Playoff will not be taken.
