Report: 2 Spartan defenders, including former DB starter, enter transfer portal

Michigan State is off to a 4-0 start under head coach Mel Tucker, including a dramatic overtime win over Nebraska this weekend. Unfortunately, that start is still not without its speed bumps.
The Spartans saw one freshman defender hop into the transfer portal at the start of the weekend, and a pair of veterans are reportedly entering the portal coming out of the weekend. According to Rainer Sabin with the Detroit Free Press, DB Kalon Gervin and LB Chase Kline are entering the portal:
Michigan State cornerback Kalon Gervin and linebacker Chase Kline have entered the NCAA transfer portal, @freepsports

Both players were key contributors in 2020. Kline finished fourth on the team with 29 total tackles while Gervin started 6 games and finished tied for the team lead with 4 passes defended to go with 22 tackles.
Kline and Gervin both played this season, but with Saturday marking the fourth game of the season, it is decision time for players who might be considering a change of scenery. Under current NCAA rules, a player can retain a year of eligibility if they appear in 4 games or less in a season.
Correction: Gervin appeared on special teams Saturday in the overtime win against Nebraska. https://t.co/2iYHSCnr4U

It will be interesting to see how this plays out moving forward, but the Spartans appear to be on the correct trend under Tucker.
