All eyes were on Iowa City over the weekend when Iowa hosted Penn State for the Top-5 showdown at Kinnick Stadium.

When the Hawkeyes closed out the Nittany Lions with 10 unanswered points in the final period, there is no way they could’ve realized what would develop later in the day.

When Texas A&M held on to topple then No. 1 Alabama on Saturday night, Iowa found themselves getting a jump to the No. 2 spot in Sunday’s AP Top-25 Poll. Georgia took the 1-spot from the Tide, who slipped to No. 5 with the loss.

This is Iowa’s highest ranking in the AP Poll since it reached No. 1 overall in 1985.

It marks the first time Iowa has been as high in the AP rankings since their historic 1985 season. Before this season, Iowa had been in the top-2 nationally just four times, with three of those occasions peaking at the No. 1 spot. The Hawkeyes 1958 National Championship team finished No. 2 in the AP.

Next up for the Hawkeyes, they will host Purdue on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2:30 PM.
