Here’s what Pat Fitzgerald said after Northwestern’s victory over Rutgers

That’s the bounce-back game Northwestern needed.

Two weeks after getting blown out 56-7 by Nebraska, the Wildcats came out of the bye week to beat Rutgers 21-7 at Ryan Field in Saturday afternoon’s homecoming game. Northwestern, which allowed a B1G-worst 449.2 yards per game coming in, held the Scarlet Knights to 222 total yards, including just 63 rushing yards.

South Carolina transfer Ryan Hilinski looked good at quarterback, completing 18 of 33 passes for 267 yards and 2 touchdowns in the effort. It was his second start at Northwestern, and he looked much better this time around than he did against Nebraska.

Northwestern is now back to .500 with a 3-3 record. Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald met the media after the game to talk about the much-needed victory, Hilinski’s performance and more.
