After just one season as Rutgers’ offensive coordinator, Drew Mehringer is reportedly leaving the Scarlet Knights to join Tom Herman’s staff at Texas, via nj.com.

“It is unclear what role Mehringer will have at Texas, where offensive coordinator is open because Herman’s last play-caller, Major Applewhite, replaced him as head coach at Houston,” Ryan Dunleavy of nj.com wrote. “Mehringer, who spent one year as an offensive coordinator at James Madison, could return to a position coach role.”

It doesn’t appear clear as to what role Mehringer will serve at Texas, but he is familiar with Herman. Mehringer played under Herman at Rice before following him to Iowa State, Ohio State and then Houston as a wide receivers coach, before taking the gig at Rutgers.

According to a source of Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Mehringer will be the Longhorns’ passing game coordinator.

During his lone season with the Scarlet Knights, Mehringer’s offense ranked 127th overall in scoring, 122nd in passing and 104th in rushing – not exactly the best in the country. But, relationships are huge in any industry, and, this move screams at just that.
