Ohio State: How will the Buckeyes’ stars stack up in the OSU record book?

However the 2021 season ends up for Ohio State, this Buckeyes offense is electric. How electric? Well, historically so.
Looking over the seasons that CJ Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are having, it’s pretty clear these guys will be all over the OSU record book. But just how high up on the various lists? Let’s break it down.
CJ Stroud
2021: 1,699 passing yards, 18 TDs, 3 INTs
Projects to (in a 15-game season): 4,248 yards, 45 TDs
Stroud looks to be all over the OSU record book. Ohio State has only had 5 3,000-yard passing seasons, and only injury can prevent Stroud from reaching that mark. For that matter, 2nd all-time on OSU’s single-season passing chart is Joe Germaine with 3,330 yards (in 1998). That looks entirely within reach for Stroud, who does have some work cut out to reach Dwayne Haskins’ school record of 4,831 passing yards. But even if he replicates his numbers from the first half of the season (when he missed an entire game) in the second half, Stroud will be No. 2 all-time in single-season passing yards. Considering that 10th all-time in OSU career passing yards is 5,396, Stroud will likely move well into the top 10 on that list in 2022.
Meanwhile, only 5 OSU QBs have thrown 30 touchdowns in a season. Again, that looks entirely within reach, and again, Stroud could possibly pass the current No. 2 on that list — Justin Fields with 41. As 10th all-time in OSU career passing touchdowns is just 37, Stroud will likely be on that list by the end of the current season, and is probable to move to 2nd (Fields’ 63 is currently there) next season.
TreVeyon Henderson
2021: 70 carries, 612 yards, 9 TDs
Projects to (in a 15-game season): 1,530 yards, 23 TDs
Henderson’s current progress would reach him barely into the top 10 in single-season rushing yardage for OSU. Currently, 10th place is Carlos Hyde’s 1,521 yards in 2013. The touchdown total is likely to be more impressive. OSU’s all-time single-season rushing TD mark is 25 by Pete Johnson in 1975. Henderson’s current pace would tie him for No. 3 on that list with Ezekiel Elliott. That said, Henderson will likely see more than 11.8 carries per game in the second half of the season, which could positively impact his numbers.
On the career list, Henderson still has miles to go behind Archie Griffin’s career mark of 5,589 rushing yards. Could he get there in 3 years? It’s a tall order. Pete Johnson’s 56 career rushing touchdowns looks like an easier target. But even 2 healthy seasons as a Buckeye figure to boost Henderson into the top 10 on both lists.
Chris Olave
2021: 30 receptions, 494 yards, 7 TDs
Projects to (in a 15-game season): 75 receptions, 1,235 yards, 18 TDs
Olave is on pace to finish 3rd in OSU single-season history in receptions, still a chunk behind Parris Campbell’s school record of 90 catches. He’s also likely to end up 3rd on the OSU career receptions list (28 more receptions would land him there). Likewise, he’s on pace for 3rd in receiving yards in a season. OSU has had 5 1,000-yard receivers, but Olave is almost certain to be a 6th. Meanwhile, he’s just over 600 receiving yards behind Michael Jenkins’ career receiving yardage record, which could be reached. Olave is 5 scores behind David Boston’s OSU record of 34 career receiving TDs, and that’s also very much within reach, as could be Terry Glenn’s single-season receiving TD mark of 17.
Garrett Wilson
2021: 31 receptions, 546 yards, 6 TDs
Projects to (in a 15-game season): 78 receptions, 1,365 yards, 15 TDs
Many of these marks place Wilson on pace with Olave in the single-season record book. Wilson is also all but certain to become a 1,000-yard receiver. For the career, Wilson (who has 104 career receptions) needs 32 more catches to reach OSU’s career top 10 in receptions. He could reasonably climb to perhaps 6th in career catches, currently held by Corey Brown with 145. Wilson is less than 400 yards from reaching OSU’s top 10 in career receiving yards. He’s also 2 touchdowns shy of OSU’s top 10 in career receiving TDs. If Wilson wants to return for a senior season, he could approach the top of the list of virtually all of the OSU receiving marks.
