Penn State is coming off the bye and its first loss of the season to Iowa 23-20 two weeks ago. Penn State is 5-1, 2-1 in B1G play, and they are No. 7 in the country, according to the AP Top 25 poll.

College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit talks about the Nittany Lions and how they need to be more explosive on offense.

“To me, Penn State, it’s about getting healthy,” said Herbstreit. “Getting Sean Clifford back. … They need more explosive plays downfield. Against these bigger teams that they’re going to be playing, they can’t score 28 points per game and go to Columbus and win. They’ve got to figure out a way to get more points on the board.”

Penn State has only scored over 30 points twice this season, 44 against Ball State and 38 against FCS Villanova. The Nittany Lions have not scored more than 28 against a Power 5 opponent.

Penn State still has to play 3 top 10 opponents in the AP Top 25 poll. Those opponents are No. 5 Ohio State; No. 6 Michigan and to round out the season, the Lions go on the road to face No. 9 Michigan State.

Penn State  plays host to Illinois at noon ET on ABC.
