It was another bad performance from Northwestern as nothing seems to be going right this season.
The Wildcats dropped to 3-5 after the Golden Gophers dropped 41 on them, half of which came in the 4th quarter. Minnesota’s rushing attack gave Northwestern fits as running back Mar’Keise Irving finished with 19 carries for 110 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
Derik LeCaptain and Tanner Morgan also each had 1 rushing touchdown by the end of the game. Morgan didn’t have to do much in the passing game as he only finished with 134 yards.
After the game, head coach Pat Fitzgerald spoke to the media about what went wrong.
Fitz: "There's not a whole lot to say. … We put ourselves in a hole."

Fitz said Marty was close to playing last week. He said he thought Marty gave the team a good spark and made some key plays. He wants his receivers to help him out by not dropping as many passes.

Fitz was happy with their drive that started the second half but believed that self-inflicted wounds hurt them in the end.

Fitz: "Our defensive line, for a lot of plays, played really well. But the ball was getting spit out to the perimeter and we would miss a tackle."

Fitz: "That's what's really frustrating for me. The things that we're working at [in practice] we can't get done consistently. If you can't execute consistently, we are going to make some personnel changes."

Fitz said it was challenging to stop Minnesota in the run game because the defense spent so much time out there.
