A MAC program is the latest to be added to a growing list of schools looking for a new head football coach.

Thursday morning, Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported that Akron has parted ways with head coach Tom Arth. He had been the leader of the Zips since 2019 but has not come close to producing a winning season.

News of Arth’s termination comes the morning after Akron dropped a 31-25 decision to Ball State at home. The Zips fell to 2-7 on the year, with the only victories coming over Bryant and Bowling Green.

Arth has posted a 3-24 record and is 2-17 in conference games as the head coach at Akron. The Zips were 0-12 during his first year in 2019 and finished 1-5 during a pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Before taking over at Akron, Arth was the head coach at Chattanooga for 2 seasons. He was 9-13 during his time with the Mocs and finished 6-5 in 2018. Before that, Arth had a successful 4-year run at John Carroll, a Division III program.

Arth’s teams at John Carroll racked up a 40-8 record and reached the Division III playoffs 3 times in 4 seasons.

Associated head coach Oscar Rodriguez will finish the season for the Zips in an interim role. Akron will play Western Michigan, Kent State and Toledo to close out the year.
