The FBS coaching carousel continues to move with reports that UMASS is parting ways with head coach Walt Bell and defensive coordinator Tommy Restivo. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg shared the report.

Bell went 2-23 in 3 years with the Minutemen. That included a 1-8 mark this season for the FBS independent program following Saturday’s 33-22 loss to FCS member Rhode Island on homecoming weekend. UMass also went winless in 4 games during a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

Run game coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Miller will serve as the team’s interim head coach. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately for what’s considered one of the toughest jobs in major college football.

The Minutemen have regular-season games left against Maine on Saturday at home followed by road contests against Army on Nov. 20 and New Mexico State on Nov. 27.
