Former Wisconsin basketball head coach Bo Ryan to return to Kohl Center this week

A long time Wisconsin basketball great will be returning to Kohl Center on Friday.

Bo Ryan will be watching his son, Will Ryan coach against the Badgers as the head coach of the UW-Green Bay Phoenix per Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Bo Ryan was the head coach of the Wisconsin men’s basketball program from 2001 to 2015. He had a 364-130 as head coach during his 14 years there. The Badgers also never failed to make to the NCAA tournament during his time there as well, with Final Four appearances in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons.

His son Will in now in his second season at UW-Green Bay. During his first year, the Phoenix went 8-17. Before his tenure with the Phoenix, he coached for the Wheeling University Cardinals, leading them to a 14-13 record.

Now Bo Ryan will watch current head coach Greg Gard take on his son’s team. Gard’s coaching record is 119-70 since taking over for Bo Ryan in 2015. He led the Badgers to a regular season B1G championship in 2019, where they finished with a 21-10 record. Gard has only missed the NCAA tournament once since taking the Wisconsin job.

We’ll see if Bo Ryan approves of the state the program he built is in on Friday as Wisconsin and UW-Green Bay play at 8 p.m ET.
