Now that Scott Frost has received some job security at Nebraska, some new details are emerging about his restructured contract and the new buyout figure.
The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman is reporting that Frost will see his salary rise in 2023 and earn an extra year extension if he meets “metrics agreed upon.” The new buyout takes effect next Oct. 1; it will see Frost paid $7.5 million if fired next year on a prorated basis, with the money dropping each year through 2025.
A notable provision (and incentive to win) in Scott Frost’s restructured Nebraska deal: If he meets “metrics mutually agreed upon” by the coach and school in 2022, his $4 million salary will be bumped back to $5 million and he’ll get a one-year extension through Dec. 31, 2027.

Nebraska coach Scott Frost’s new contract buyout goes into effect Oct. 1, 2022. If fired next year, he’s owed $7.5M (down from $15M) on a prorated basis, $5M in 2023, $2.5M in 2024 and $1.25M in 2025. If fired without cause before Oct. 1, 2022, the old buyout remains effective.

Earlier this week, Nebraska announced Frost had agreed to a restructured contract to return to the team in 2022. Those terms included a reduction in his annual salary from $5 million to $4 million and a reduced buyout.
The “agreed upon” metrics were not included in the contract and are currently unknown.
Nebraska is on a 4-game losing streak, most recently falling 26-17 at Ohio State. The Cornhuskers are 3-7 overall, last in the B1G West, and will return to action on Nov. 20 at Wisconsin.
